What if my diapers are repelling? Use Dawn...

One wise mom's advice for stripping diapers that are repelling is:

A quick scrub with DAWN (or other grease cutting dish detergent) – it works like a charm!

On a clean, dry diaper, apply a little bit of dawn to the inside, add water, work into a lather by hand (one diaper at a time), rinse and then launder.

Be sure that you are using a reduced amount of detergent as detergents leave residue (the more you use, the more residue you can expect) and the problem will likely return. Avoid scented detergents as these are specifically designed to leave residues. The thought that the more detergent you use the cleaner your diapers will be, is not the case. Also be sure to do a second rinse after the wash cycle to rid as much detergent as possible.

Some “for baby” detergents can also be problematic as plant oils tend not to rinse out as well.

If you are using, bumgenius pocket diapers, they suggest not using vinegar. I'm not sure why.

fancygirlnancy, What detergent do you use on non-diaper laundry? and are these your washer/dryer or did they come with the house? sometimes fabric softener can build up inside a washer and could be unknowingly building up on your diapers? You might need to strip your washer, have you ever done that before?

I use melaluca for non diaper laundry. The washer was mine and I have used it for years, just started with diapers about 14 months ago. The dryer was bought used a few months ago. I have not stripped them...how do I do that??

There are different methods but one is to add 2 cups white vinegar or 1 cup bleach to an empty washer. Fill with cold water for bleach, hot/warm for vinegar, and run a full cycle. This can be done monthly.

Also, I just googled the Melaleuca detergent and this thread http://www.mothering.com/discussions/archive/index.php/t-48095.html someone mentions that it doesn't work well with fleece, including FuzziBunz. So this might all be solved if you switch detergents. Maybe try Charlies Soap or something you can use on both diapers and laundry.
